It took a weekend for the San Francisco Giants and CEO Larry Baer to realize his position was untenable after video showed him in an altercation with his wife.
The team announced Monday that Baer asked to be put on temporary leave.
“Mr. Baer has acknowledged that his behavior was unacceptable, apologized to the organization and is committed to taking steps to make sure this never happens again,” the board of directors said in a statement. “He has also requested, and the board has accepted, his request to take personal time away from the Giants beginning today. The Board has asked the Giants executive team to manage the day to day operations of the Club during this period, reporting directly to the Board.”
In the video published by TMZ on Friday afternoon, the same day of the incident, Baer knocks his wife, Pam, to the ground while fighting over a cellphone in a public park in San Francisco. Pam is heard screaming, “Oh my God, no, help!”
In another clip, Larry Baer is heard telling his wife, who is off camera, “Stop, Pam, stop” while a witness says, “Get the f–k away from him.”
Baer initially tried downplaying the incident, blaming his wife’s fall on an “injured foot” and saying the matter was “resolved.”
“Major League Baseball is taking the lead in gathering all facts surrounding the situation. The organization is cooperating fully with the process,” the statement read.
