Derek Holland’s appearance on MLB Network’s “Intentional Talk” ended up being no laughing matter.
The Giants lefty appeared on the show with Kevin Millar and Chris Rose on Wednesday before San Francisco faced the Mets at Citi Field. He brought his “hype man” or team massage therapist, Haro Ogawa, along with him. Ogawa, a native of Japan was never identified by name or by his position with the team and Holland continually used an exaggerated Asian accent during the sketch — with its sole joke based around the therapist’s ethnicity.
Holland, dressed in a brown-haired wig and a cut sleeve, Bob Ross T-shirt, on multiple occasions bowed to Ogawa while saying “much respect” after re-asking him questions from Rose and Millar such as, “Would you kiss a giraffe?” and “Do you like water?”
Ogawa appeared to be in on the attempted joke and the act elicited chuckles from the hosts. Rose was ready to end the segment, but Holland asked Ogawa who his favorite player was one more time before signing off. It prompted Holland to again yell with Ogawa in a mocking Asian accent.
The Giants issued a statement to Deadspin after criticism of Holland mounted online.
“The Giants organization does not condone that type of behavior in any way,” a Giants spokesman said. “We spoke to Derek regarding his interview yesterday and he completely understands the severity of the situation and apologizes if it offended anyone.”
Holland issued his own apology to reporters before the Giants beat the Mets 3-1 on Thursday.
“I want to make sure it’s clear that was all on me,” he said. “Now it’s become a distraction to the team. I don’t want that. I don’t want to have offended anybody.”
He added that he apologized to Ogawa and other Asian team employees, who Holland said, “understand we were just doing a bit, but it was too far.”
