A day later, Joe Girardi stood by his decision to replace reliever David Robertson with Alfredo Aceves, who gave up two hits — including the game-winning double to Jeff Mathis — in the Yankees’ 5-4, 11-inning loss to the Angels on Monday.
“I did not have the feeling that it was a mistake because of the preparation that we did before the game and our reasoning for using Ace,” Girardi said, according to NJ.com. “I did think about it. You always think about it. But I still feel that it was the move that we would have made, and it just didn’t work out.”
Girardi answered questions about his decision directly and forcefully.
“Yeah, you are under a microscope, but if you manage a game not to be second-guessed, then I don’t think you are managing the game correctly,” Girardi said, according to fanhouse.com.
“Bringing in Ace, if it doesn’t work, I know I’m going to be second-guessed, but I believed it was the right move. We talked about it in the dugout and I believed it was the right move. It didn’t work.”
Girardi did not provide details on what he saw in the scouting report he looked at right before he went to the mound to pull Robertson.
