INDIANAPOLIS — In an interesting revelation, the final holdup in the Curtis Granderson deal involved the Yankees requesting the All-Star center fielder visit an ophthalmologist.

The Yankees wanted Granderson’s eyes checked based on his exorbitant strikeout totals and his occasional bad jumps on balls in the outfield.

“Did we see it? Yes,” GM Brian Cashman said of Granderson taking puzzling routes on fly balls. “Sometimes he took routes that made you scratch your head.”

An eye exam is a surprising request, considering Granderson is not an 18-year-old kid but a polished veteran player. Granderson, who will be 29 in March, has averaged 142 strikeouts the past four seasons.
