Grapefruit: Mets at Tigers
LAKELAND, Fla. — Freddy Garcia gets another chance (and possibly one of his last) to claim the Mets’ fifth-starter job today when he makes a Grapefruit League start here against the Tigers. The veteran Garcia is in camp on a minor-league deal trying to prove he has recovered from reconstructive shoulder surgery, but his quest to do that has been underwhelming so far. He had allowed six earned runs and four walks in 4 2/3 innings in two outings against the Cardinals and one against the University of Michigan.
Here is the Mets’ order for the 1:05 p.m. game, which is not being televised:
Cory Sullivan CF
Jose Valentin 2B
Daniel Murphy DH
Nick Evans 1B
Bobby Kielty RF
Jeremy Reed LF
Andy Green 3B
Omir Santos C
Ruben Tejada SS
Also scheduled to pitch for the Mets are LHP Casey Fossum, LHP Ron Villone, RHP Kyle Snyder, RHP Bobby Parnell, RHP Darren O’Day and RHP Rocky Cherry.
On a side note, the Mets reassigned LHP Tom Martin to their minor-league camp today after it was announced Martin would miss several weeks with a broken right wrist suffered in a spill at his Port St. Lucie home Wednesday.
