Robinson Cano’s return to the field was short-lived.
Activated from the injured list for Wednesday night’s game against the Giants, the Mets second baseman went 0-for-2 with an RBI, but was removed at the top of the fifth inning with left quad tightness, the team announced. Cano had been out since May 23 with a strained left calf.
With the bases loaded and one out in the third inning, Cano hit a groundball to the right side, and lightly jogged to first, as the Giants turned a double play. Cano, who heard boos from the Citi Field crowd, had said prior to the game that he wasn’t yet at full strength.
The 36-year-old had initially suffered the injury while running out a groundball, days after being lambasted on a pair of plays for his lack of hustle.
“I have to [be cautious] for the first couple of games,” Cano said. “You’re never gonna be 100 percent unless you take longer than what it is. It’s an injury. It’s a muscle. You have to stretch it and stretch it. The more that you play, the more that you’re gonna stretch it, and go back to normal. Hopefully it takes just a few games.
