The Mets have told former Diamondbacks third-base coach Chip Hale that he is their choice to replace Razor Shines in the same role in Flushing.

A formal announcement isn’t expected until after the World Series.

Hale, 44, was Arizona’s third-base coach the past three seasons but was purged in the fallout from the D-backs’ disappointing 70-92 finish this year.

The Mets are hoping he can bring improvement to an area that was a disaster in 2009, when Shines had a whopping 18 baserunners thrown out at the plate.

Jerry Manuel had said Shines would likely become the bench coach, but Hale’s former boss in Arizona, Bob Melvin, has emerged as a candidate for that position.

Melvin, who could slide easily into the Manuel’s spot if the Mets get off to a slow start, is still a managerial candidate with the Nationals and is waiting to see what Washington decides before pursuing the Mets’ opening.

Melvin, incidentally, lives in Manhattan in the offseason.
