Hernandez strong over five
PORT ST. LUCIE — Livan Hernandez made a strong bid for the Mets’ fifth-starter job here today, throwing five innings of one-run ball against the Braves before giving way to fellow No. 5 candidate Freddy Garcia with a 2-1 lead. Hernandez’s velocity wasn’t exactly impressive (mid-80 mph range), but he was crafty and didn’t walk anyone. He allowed just five hits and struck out three.
