Steven Souza’s season is over before it began.
The Diamondbacks outfielder slipped while crossing home plate on Monday, collapsing in pain during the fourth inning against the White Sox in an exhibition game at Chase Field in Phoenix. An MRI confirmed the worst-case scenario for the player and the team:
A torn left ACL, torn left LCL, partially torn left PCL and a posterior lateral capsule tear.
Souza’s litany of injuries will require surgery, according to the Athletic, and the recovery will reportedly keep him out until after the 2019 season comes to a close.
The 29-year-old is on a one-year contract worth $4.125 million this season, and will be arbitration eligible for 2020.
