MIAMI — Even for a veteran like David Wright, jitters couldn’t be avoided Sunday.

The Mets captain was back in game action for the first time in nearly a year, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in five innings at third base for Single-A St. Lucie at Clearwater. Wright did not have a grounder hit to him, but caught a pop-up.

“I felt like I got here so early that I was counting down the minutes — I wanted to get it going,” Wright told media, including SNY after his rehab appearance. “It was good to get out there and hopefully the results will come, but for now it was getting three at-bats.”

Wright will be evaluated Monday, when he could return to the lineup for St. Lucie. But Wright also will not push too hard as he attempts a return to major league action for the first time since May 2016. The Mets third baseman has undergone three surgeries since playing in his first major league game. Wright had a rehab assignment scuttled last August to undergo surgery for a torn rotator cuff. Later in the offseason he underwent surgery to alleviate pressure on his lower back, as he battles spinal stenosis, a chronic condition.

“For me, I have to not necessarily temper expectations, but be realistic about the process and make sure I am doing the work behind the scenes, and hopefully to go back in there and start seeing the results as we get farther along in this rehab,” Wright said.

Wright is under contract through 2020 and still stands to collect about $33 million on that deal. He has played only 37 games since the conclusion of the 2015 season, which culminated with the first World Series appearance of his career.

Ideally, the Mets would like to have Wright ready for early September, when rosters can expand to 40 players. But the journey from Port St. Lucie to New York will be a marathon, as the 35-year-old Wright attempts to handle the daily grind of baseball again, while trying to produce at the plate.

“I have got to see results down here,” Wright said. “In order to go up and try to help the guys, I am going to have to show I can be productive and go up there and be counted on to get some hits and make the plays.”
