We are swimming in uncharted waters. We are living in a world without sports.
The coronavirus pandemic has forced the NBA, NHL, MLS and other soccer leagues, and NASCAR to suspend their seasons. There will be no March Madness this year. The PGA canceled The Players Championship after the first round, and all tournaments until the Masters, which also has been postponed.
The status of the Olympics remains up in the air, and though the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby is still scheduled for May 2, organizers are monitoring the situation. Heck, even the XFL canceled the remainder of its season (yes, they were apparently still playing).
Major League Baseball has canceled the rest of spring training and pushed back the start of its season at least two weeks.
These are serious and stressful times, but that is why distractions are needed more than ever. We need something to look forward to and make us smile. We need a sign of normalcy, something to reassure us that everything will be alright. Maybe a little dose of fantasy can help make reality brighter.
Nolan ArenadoAPHow? Maybe by mimicking Madman Drew Loftis’ playbook and drafting as many fantasy teams as possible!
Whether you participate in online baseball drafts with friends or strangers, give your brain a chance to think about something other than whether you have enough peanut butter, toilet paper or $50 bottles of off-brand hand sanitizer.
Drafting multiple fantasy teams will give you the chance to think and talk about something positive — the return of baseball — and not sit around to ponder whether your 98.8 degree temperature is reason enough to visit the doctor.
Drafting multiple teams gives you the camaraderie you may not have if you’re quarantined or working from home.
Drafting multiple teams will give you something to do and provide the opportunity to try different strategies. You can try drafting power-heavy or speed-driven teams. Use a different draft to select a squad in which your first five picks are used on the best pitchers available. You can try drafting a team in which your oldest player is Braves phenom Ronald Acuna (he’s 22), or having a team of just 2017 Astros and naming them the Garbage Pail Kids.
The possibilities are endless, and they will give you a break from this never-ending coronvirus news cycle. Sure, it will give you a lot of work to do on a daily basis once the season begins — unless you can find the elusive mock draft that isn’t littered with nonsense picks or you aim to be a hated absentee owner once the season begins — but it will be fun to see the results.
The most important thing is to remain informed on everything in regard to COVID-19, while keeping yourself — and your loved ones — healthy and safe. But you also have to give yourself a break, live a little and force yourself to remember that this too shall pass. Sports may not be here today, tomorrow or even next week, but they will return. In the meantime, draft away.
