A little more than a year after working at the MillerCoors brewery, Trevor Richards will go to work Friday night at Miller Park to face the Brewers.

The Marlins pitcher is set to make his fourth career major-league start in the city where he worked a side job while trying to keep his baseball dreams alive.

The 24-year-old Richards had gone undrafted out of Drury University and was playing in an independent league with the Gateway Grizzlies until 2016, when the Marlins purchased his contract. He pitched in Single-A the rest of the season before going to live with his girlfriend in Milwaukee for the offseason.

Richards decided he needed a job to make some money and fill his downtime. He originally applied to be a parking valet at a hotel, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, but ended up landing in guest relations at MillerCoors. He filled in for an employee on medical leave and worked in the gift shop and employee beer store.

“Trevor applied and was perfect for the job,” his supervisor, Kristie Holden, told ESPN. “And it worked out for him because it put him in the routine that pitchers crave. He worked out at the gym in the morning and could throw when work was over.”

Richards earned $9/hour before leaving for the 2017 season, when he advanced to Double-A, posted a 2.87 ERA and was named the Marlins’ minor-league player of the year.

This year, Richards was a non-roster invitee to spring training and ran with the opportunity, resulting in a call to the bigs by the Marlins’ second series to make his debut against the Red Sox.

On Wednesday, as the team enjoyed an off day in Milwaukee, Richards brought his teammates to his old stomping grounds for a VIP brewery tour. Richards is 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA this season, but threw seven shutout innings against the Pirates in his last start.

“It’s a dream come true,” Richards told the Journal Sentinel. “Honestly, I still don’t know if it’s even sunk in. It’s just awesome. Words can’t really describe it.”
