FROM JOEL SHERMAN

Is it possible that $275 million the Yankees spent on Alex Rodriguez was a bargain? There are a lot of factors in why the Yankee offense looks so bad, right now. But it is not too much of a stretch to suggest the biggest one is the absence of the biggest star. This has become like a Twilight Zone episode in which we get to see what life would have looked like had the Yankees and A-Rod actually completed that offseason divorce. Had Rodriguez been armed last November with tapes of what the current offense looks like without him, he probably could have demanded (and received) $350 million or more. It is hard to say the Yanks got a bargain for $275 million, but just watch this team perform, especially against lefties (yes, Jorge Posada is a gigantic absence, as well).
