HOW TO IMPROVE HR DERBY
Three things I would do to add theater to the Home Run Derby tonight:
1. Make the distances worth various points. If a guy hits one 400 feet he gets one point, 450 two points, 475 three points and 500-plus four points. This is supposed to be theatric. No one just dunks in the slam dunk contest and people want to see the moon shots. Also you can add drama if a guy could come from way back by winning with a couple of 500-foot shots.
2. Make it more league oriented. Make the first round strictly four individual contests of NL players vs. AL players. And limit it to three rounds of three outs so the individual contestants move faster through the process.
3. For one round allow the use of aluminum bats and see the kind of damage that would be done. Or use tighter wound baseballs that would really fly. Again, this is all to excite fans. How about Albert Pujols with an aluminum bat?
