As the Yankees’ payroll grows bigger, the chances of adding Manny Machado only get smaller.
After landing reliever Adam Ottavino on a three-year, $27 million deal, pending a physical, the Yankees’ payroll entering next season is currently at about $209 million, with a projected total of $224 million — including expenses like benefits and minor league call-ups.
After cutting payroll by over $34 million during the previous offseason to get under the luxury-tax threshold last season, the Yankees’ payroll has risen over this year’s $206 million limit, though a potential trade of Sonny Gray could get the team back under the mark.
Even if the Yankees cut payroll below $200 million, they likely wouldn’t land Machado for less than that. It’s a luxury the team can afford, but appears unwilling to pay.
