Stephen Piscotty put his hand to his heart and crossed home plate, looking up at his mom in heaven.

The A’s right fielder made a touching return to the diamond Tuesday night, launching a second-inning home run over the Green Monster at Fenway Park during a game with the Red Sox in his first-at bat since coming off the bereavement list. Piscotty’s mom, Gretchen, lost her battle with ALS last week at age 55.

Piscotty didn’t receive the same reaction in the away stadium as he had two days after Gretchen’s death, when the fans and players alike lifted him up with a standing ovation as the A’s played the Astros in Oakland. Still, he smiled ear-to-ear as he went down the receiving line in the dugout, high-fiving each of his teammates after staking them to a 3-0 lead.

Piscotty, who was traded from the Cardinals to the A’s in December partly to be closer to his mom in Pleasanton, Calif., told manager Bob Melvin last Tuesday he was ready to get back in the lineup and feel the support of his teammates. The 27-year-old promptly hit a two-out single to center field after acknowledging the crowd’s cheers in the second inning of that game.

Piscotty missed the A’s next four games to be with his family, but, with one blast, his — and Gretchen’s — presence was felt again.
