After Yu Chang’s game-deciding error in Cleveland’s loss to the White Sox on Monday, the Indians infielder revealed that he received racist messages on social media.

Chang, who is from Taiwan, posted a screenshot of the anti-Asian messages, which came from three different users – two of which no longer exist and another that is private.

“Exercise your freedom of speech in a right way,” Chang wrote. “I accept all comments, positive or negative but DEFINITELY NOT RACIST ONES. Thank you all and love you all. #StopAsianHate.”

The #StopAsianHate movement comes in wake of a surge of hate crimes against Asian-Americans since the beginning of pandemic. It began to garner national attention last month after a white man killed eight people, six of whom were of Asian descent, in a series of shootings at spas in Atlanta.

In the ninth inning of the Indians’ 4-3 loss Monday night, Chang hit Chicago’s Yasmani Grandal with a throw while trying to force him out at second base, which allowed Nick Madrigal to score the winning run.

Chang, who was playing first base, tried to get Grandal at second at second rather than stepping on first base for the second out after fielding a hit from Nick Williams. The throw hit Grandal in the helmet and the ball bounced toward the left side of the infield.

The 25-year-old has played parts of three seasons with the Indians, primarily playing shortstop and third base. He had never played first base prior to this season.
