BRADENTON, Fla. — Jorge Vazquez remains a very long shot to stick with the varsity but the soon-to-be 29-year-old corner infielder has made people notice him by going 5-for-6 with two homers. And he hasn’t embarrassed himself in the field.

“His hands are good and his arm is not an issue,’’ Joe Girardi said of 6-foot, 225-pounder who hit 18 homers and drove in 62 runs for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A) last year. “He hasn’t shown me anything that he can’t play defense.’’

If Eric Chavez is healthy, he likely will grab one of the two extra infield spots because he is a third baseman who probably could play first base in a pinch.

Andrew Brackman tested his left groin/hip problem by playing catch and if everything is OK he is slated to return to the mound Thursday. … Outfielder Greg Golson, who was hit in the head by A.J. Burnett Sunday, is expected to play Wednesday. … Infielder Ronnie Belliard (hamstring) is expected to miss at least another week.
