PORT ST. LUCIE — The Mets received a visit from Generation Ex on Tuesday.
Twelve years removed from throwing his last pitch for the Mets, free agent Jason Isringhausen made a cameo in camp to throw a bullpen session with the hope of an invite to spring training.
The 38-year-old, 15 months removed from Tommy John surgery, last appeared in the major leagues for the Rays in 2009.
Isringhausen arrived to the Mets in 1995 — along with Bill Pulsipher and Paul Wilson — as part of “Generation K.” Isringhausen’s best work came as Cardinals closer in 2004 when he saved 47 games.
“Hopefully I can bring an elder [perspective] to some guys and help out if they need it,” Isringhausen said. “If it works out, if not we’ll move on. But it’s hard to pass it up. This is where it all started. Full circle, so we’ll see what happens.”
GM Sandy Alderson is mulling the possibility of giving Isringhausen a minor-league contract. Special adviser J.P. Ricciardi watched Isringhausen throw a bullpen session. Isringhausen has a relationship with Ricciardi from their time together in Oakland.
“It doesn’t cost anything to look at a guy,” Ricciardi said. “He asked if he could come over and throw and it was no problem.”
