Viewed one way, Matt Harvey threw four pretty solid innings. Viewed as anyone outside the Angels would, Harvey had another bad night.
The former Mets star still has not quite gotten off the mat, letting up five runs (four earned) on five hits and one walk in 4 1/3 innings in a 5-4 loss in Texas on Wednesday night.
Through three innings, the 30-year-old was dealing, and the run he allowed in the fourth was on a Tommy La Stella error. When the fifth began, the good Harvey ended.
Another former Met, Asdrubal Cabrera, led off with a single. Two more singles followed. A sacrifice later, Shin-Soo Choo tripled. Suddenly it was a 4-2 Angels hole, which became 5-2 once he was pulled.
Losing it for an inning has been Harvey’s issue with Los Angeles. In his previous start, he tied his career high by allowing eight runs — five in the first — in an 11-4 loss to these same Rangers.
“This time it was the fifth, which is I guess progress from giving it up in the first,” said Harvey, whose ERA is at 9.64. “Just got to keep working and kind of dial in those first four innings and be able to get deeper into the game.”
After a promising Angels debut, Harvey has a 12.79 ERA in his past three starts.
“I think the first four innings show it’s right there, but things aren’t clicking on the cylinder at the same time,” he told reporters. “It’s frustrating, but I have to keep working and push through it.”
For Texas, former Yankee Lance Lynn (2-1) won his second straight decision in the right-hander’s first season with the Rangers, allowing 10 baserunners (seven hits, three walks) but just two runs in 5 2/3 innings.
