Austin Jackson and Phil Hughes, two of the Yankees’ top young players, both acquitted themselves quite well in the opening game of the Arizona Fall League yesterday.

Jackson went 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBI, while Hughes allowed only one hit in five scoreless innings. One problem for Hughes, though, was control – he struck out seven, but also walked five batters. In his five innings, the young right-hander threw 86 pitches, 49 for strikes. Will be interesting to see if Hughes can do a better job of throwing strikes as the AFL moves forward over the next few weeks.

The other Yankee in action, infielder Kevin Russo, went 0-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
