It appears Jed Lowrie is taking out his anger at the Mets on the baseball.
After making just eight plate appearances during the life of a two-year, $20 million contract with the Mets, Lowrie has a five-game hitting streak and a nine-game on-base streak for the Athletics. He has played in all 12 games so far with two home runs, a team-high 11 RBIs and a .333/.417/.548 slash line.
“I don’t know how to explain it,” manager Bob Melvin said, according to the San Jose Mercury News. “Maybe he’s fresh from two years but the bat looks the same as we’ve seen it and he’s actually moving around the field pretty well. He’s been durable to this point and gotten huge hits. Can’t say enough about his contributions.”

Wearing a shirt during his postgame interview that said “The Kid” as an homage to Ken Griffey Jr.’s nickname, Lowrie, the senior citizen within the Athletics lineup, quipped “I’m trying to trick them. They might think I’m younger than I am.”
It’s a stunning start considering Lowrie had zero hits in nine games – all in 2019 – in a Mets uniform. He recently alleged that the Mets refused to let him get knee surgery after a non-team doctor diagnosed a knee fat pad impingement. The Mets instead threatened him with a grievance, he claimed.
“When you’re questioned on social media or by people behind your back, I consider it to be nothing more significant than gossip,” Lowrie told The Athletic. “I’ve had some injuries, but this last situation with the Mets was really frustrating.”
“Things were unpleasant” between the Mets and Lowrie throughout last season, according to the report. He had the surgery after the Mets were eliminated from playoff contention last October. It appears to be working wonders as Lowrie is the regular second baseman for the same team with which he became an All-Star in 2018 and earned his big payday from the Mets.
Lowrie’s former agent Brodie Van Wagenen was the Mets general manager in 2018-19.
