In a muted ceremony that fit the reality of how little time Derek Jeter has spent in Wrigley Field — just four of his career 2,639 games — the Cubs saluted the Yankees’ retiring captain Tuesday with a “2” from the stadium’s iconic scoreboard shortly before the game’s first pitch. Starlin Castro, the Cubs’ young shortstop, made the presentation.

Jeter said he attended a handful of Cubs games as a child growing up in Kalamazoo, Mich., and his family occasionally vacationed in Chicago. On his last day of school as a high-school senior, Jeter said, he went to a Cubs game.

Cubs Hall of Fame shortstop Ernie Banks spent time with Jeter before the game.

“I’ve run into Ernie a lot,” Jeter said. “He treated me well when I was first coming up. I’ve always appreciated the way he treated me.”
