Yes, he’s a great player. But Joe Girardi added the “but.”
The former Yankees manager weighed in on the Manny Machado debate, expressing to NJ Advance Media the financial concerns of attaching yourself to a player — even a superstar — for such a long time and for hundreds of millions of dollars.
Girardi did not get into the other worries associated with Machado — the admittedly suspect hustle that has made him so polarizing — but he pointed out there are a lot of ways for the Yankees to spend their money this offseason.
“That’s something that they will have to investigate,” Girardi said at Steiner Sports in the Roosevelt Field Mall on Saturday.
“I’m not sure from a financial standpoint where Manny is going to be and how it fits within their plans,” added the Yankees manager from 2008-17. “There’s no doubt that Manny’s a great player, but there’s a lot of great players that are out there. This is a pretty strong free-agent class.”
“There are some pretty good bullpen arms that have experience. There are some pretty good outfielders, good infielders. That’s something that they have to decide.”
Machado would be a great short-term fit with Didi Gregorius set to miss time following Tommy John surgery. But with Gregorius at short and Miguel Andujar at third, the Yankees would have to do some juggling upon Gregorius’ return. And Machado, 26, is likely looking for a record-setting deal, the kind that makes him the face of an organization for a long time.
