After throwing Mike Piazza’s broken bat back at him during the 2000 World Series, Roger Clemens went back to the clubhouse and cried, according to then-Yankees manager Joe Torre.

“[Pitching coach] Mel Stottlemyre, who was not coaching with us because he was in the hospital with multiple myeloma, was able to come out of the hospital and watch from my office,” Torre said on SNY’s “Like We Never Left.”

“George Steinbrenner was in there with him. After that half-inning, Roger went into the office to see Mel and Mel told me that he was crying on what had just transpired.”

The incident, during Game 2 of the series, was one of the most charged moments in Subway Series history. Clemens and Piazza already had a history, with Clemens hitting Piazza in the head earlier that season, causing the Mets catcher to be diagnosed with a concussion. Prior to that, Piazza had homered three straight times off Clemens.

So, there was tension in the air even when Piazza stepped up to the plate, and both benches cleared after Clemens threw the bat.

“Pitchers who have that passion, it leaks out all over the place,” Torre said. “He went in there and he was devastated with the result of what had happened and was crying.”

When Clemens was eventually forced to bat during a 2002 Subway Series game, the Mets retaliated by throwing behind his head.

Piazza told WFAN on Monday that there’s no lingering resentment towards Clemens.

“I saw him at Michael Jordan’s golf tournament in the mid-2000s and just said hi,” Piazza said. “I guess life has a way of mellowing you out, so I have no resentment or bitter feelings towards it.

“Maybe in his mind he never wanted to talk about it. I’m a man, so if he came to me and said he wanted to talk about it, I would, but if you spend too much time wondering what goes on in other peoples’ minds, you waste a lot of time.”
