TORONTO — John Sterling’s home run call for Giancarlo Stanton left many Yankees fans scratching their heads after he used a phrase that means “You can’t be stopped” in Italian.
Sterling said he called Berlitz Language Center and talked to an Italian master about the pronunciation. The result: “Giancarlo, non si può de stoparlo! It is a Stantonian home run.”
“No one will understand it,” Sterling said of the call he broke out when Stanton — who is not of Italian descent — went deep in his first at-bat as a Yankee in the top of the first on Thursday against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. “I hope it works.”
Stanton sent an 0-1 fastball from J.A. Happ over the right-center field fence to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead over the Blue Jays after Brett Gardner led off the game by reaching on an error by left fielder Curtis Granderson, who dropped a line drive that went straight to him. Aaron Judge whiffed to bring up Stanton, who led the majors with 59 homers last season with the Marlins.
