TAMPA — While it is widely assumed lefty Jordan Montgomery will secure the No. 4 starter’s spot because he is healthy and had made 35 big league starts before undergoing Tommy John surgery, who grabs the fifth slot remains one of the few open competitions in Yankees camp.

Barring a trade, a distinct possibility because the Yankees have a bevy of young arms other teams have shown an interest in and have discussed Steven Matz with the Mets, the in-house candidates for the No. 5 spot include Jonathan Loaisiga, Michael King and Luis Cessa, as well as long shots Clarke Schmidt and Deivi Garcia.

Talent evaluators are split on what the 25-year-old Loaisiga is. Some see him as a starter because his workload can be managed more easily in the rotation. Others believe his stuff, which includes a high-90s fastball, would play in the bullpen.

The final 3 ½ weeks of spring training will reveal which way the Yankees go, and it is possible they would decide a reliever starting a game is the way to go during the first month of the season, when they have four days off and will likely get a rainout or two because only six of the first 32 games will be played in stadiums with a roof.

The biggest question about Loaisiga is health. The Giants released him because of shoulder issues that sidelined him for the entire 2014 and 2015 seasons. He pitched one minor league game in May 2016 for the Yankees and was on the big league injured list last year from the middle of May to the middle of August.

So far this exhibition season, the right-hander has been impressive. In two outings he has fanned five in three innings, which fits into his big league ratio of strikeouts (70) to innings pitched (56 ¹/₃).

Because general manager Brian Cashman said in the offseason the starting third base job was Gio Urshela’s to lose, the emphasis has been on moving Miguel Andujar to several positions to take advantage of his live bat. Andujar has gotten a taste of left field and is expected to be introduced to first base at some point this week.

However, nowhere does it say that Andujar can’t unseat Urshela as the starting third baseman, even though the slick-fielding Urshela is out of options.

Aroldis Chapman is scheduled to throw in a game for the first time Wednesday against the Phillies. Masahiro Tanaka is slated to make his second spring training start against the Red Sox on Tuesday at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
