If Jose Berrios was feeling any nerves Thursday afternoon, a little more than 24 hours shy of taking the ball for Game 1 of the ALDS against the Yankees on Friday night, the Twins right-hander certainly wasn’t showing it.

Before he took the stage for a press conference, the 25-year-old faked throwing up in a nearby trash can. Later, when asked if he had all his pitches where he wanted them, Berrios remained loose.

“Yes. I can’t say no, because I pitch tomorrow,” he said with a laugh.

Berrios will try to get the Twins off on the right foot against the Yankees’ powerhouse lineup, after a regular season in which he was 14-8 with a 3.68 ERA. The Twins’ ace struck out 195 batters in 200 ¹/₃ innings, none of which came against the Yankees.

But Berrios does have history, and a playoff one at that, against the Yankees. He took the loss in the 2017 wild-card game at Yankee Stadium, pitching in relief and giving up three runs and five hits over three innings. He plans on using that to his advantage.

“Since then, I’ve grown a lot as a player,” Berrios said. “Inning by inning, game by game, I gain a lot of experience, and I think that’s going to help me tomorrow night.”

Berrios owns a 6.35 ERA in four appearances against the Yankees in his career, but Twins manager Rocco Baldelli expressed full confidence that he was ready for the big stage Friday night.

“Getting a chance to know him even going back into this offseason, the one thing that stood out was his maturity level for being a guy who’s still pretty young,” Baldelli said. “None of us have everything figured out, but he has some things figured out. He’s going to be OK.”

Baldelli was not yet ready to name his starters for Game 2 or Game 3, but Berrios was looking forward to leading the way.

“It’s not an easy place to play in,” Berrios said. “There will be a lot of pressure and emotions, but I’m just going to prepare like a regular game and go out there and try to execute and do the things that I’ve done the entire season.”
