CHICAGO — The long parade of Yankees on the shelf added another one Thursday, when DH/first baseman Kendrys Morales landed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left calf.
“He came out of the first game of [Tuesday’s] doubleheader with a little tightness in his calf. The doctor looked at him and he thought it was best to get an MRI (exam),’’ manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees’ 5-4 loss to the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. “It showed a small strain in there. I don’t think it’s real serious but it was enough in there. I think it will be short — around that 10-day mark.’’
The injury followed the switch-hitting Morales’ best game at the plate as a Yankee. He went 3-for-5 with an RBI in the first game Tuesday against the Mets. Acquired from Oakland on May 14, Morales struggled at the plate. In 19 games with the Yankees the 35-year-old is hitting .177 (11-for-62) with a homer, five RBIs and a .562 OPS. Those subpar numbers followed a .204 (22-for-108) average for the Athletics in 34 games. He had one homer, seven RBIs and a .569 OPS.
To fill Morales’ spot, the Yankees elevated outfielder Mike Tauchman from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Depending on what the needs are out of the bullpen Thursday and Friday, Boone said he could use a reliever to start Saturday’s game against the White Sox. Boone also said Nestor Cortes Jr. could start.
Chad Green has filled the opener role four times and if he isn’t needed Friday night, he could be in play.
Brett Gardner’s two-run homer in the fourth inning extended the Yankees streak of hitting at least one homer to 16 games.
That matches the third longest streak in club history. The last time they homered in 16 consecutive games was May 15 to June 4 in 1994.
During that stretch the Yankees are 7-9 and have hit 26 homers.
Going into Thursday, the Yankees were tied for the third-longest streak in the majors this season with the Cubs. The Mariners homered in 20 straight and the Astros had a homer in 19 consecutive games.
The Yankees are 23-3 when hitting at least two homers.
The Yankees have not been shut out in 149 straight games. The last time they were shut out was on June 30, 2018 by the Red Sox in an 11-0 loss. It is the ninth-longest streak in the modern era and the second-longest in the past 18 seasons.
As impressive as 149 straight is, it is a long way from the club and MLB record of 308 games that began on Aug. 3, 1931, and ended on Aug. 2, 1933.
The Phillies acquired infielder Brad Miller from the Yankees for cash Thursday. Miller had been playing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he was hitting .294 (40-for-136) with a .994 OPS.
Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild missed a third straight game in order to deal with a personal situation in Florida.
