PORT ST. LUCIE — The competition for the No. 5 starter job will be in full swing this afternoon when the Mets split up to play an exhibition here against the University of Michigan and a Grapefruit League game in Viera, Fla., versus the Nationals. Four of the five contenders for the fifth spot will be pitching today: Tim Redding, Livan Hernandez, Freddy Garcia and Bobby Parnell. This will mark Redding’s first game appearance of the spring after he was delayed by the effects of offseason toe surgery.
Here is the Mets’ lineup for the 12:10 p.m. exhibition here against the Wilpons’ alma mater:
