ATLANTA — Luis Guillorme’s opportunities to help the Mets for the rest of the regular season could be limited.

The versatile and popular infielder was diagnosed Monday with a “moderate” left groin strain, according to the team, that will sideline him for the next four to six weeks.

Guillorme had emerged lately as the team’s starting third baseman against right-handed pitchers and his defense has been consistently among MLB’s best. Only adding to the uncertainty at third base, Eduardo Escobar has been bothered by a sore left side. Escobar returned to starting duty in the Mets’ 13-1 loss to the Braves

Escobar, who committed a fielding error, took a swing batting right-handed against lefty Danny Young in the seventh inning and grounded out. But facing Young in the ninth he batted left-handed. Escobar had batted left-handed a day earlier against lefty Brad Hand.

“I just did a swing [right-handed] to try to make contact with the pitch,” Escobar said. “I didn’t feel anything there. I am going to come in [Tuesday] and work with the trainers and take more swings and see how it feels.

“The throws felt fine. The only part I really feel uncomfortable with is swinging from the right side, but we are going to work on that and hope it feels good [Tuesday].”

The Mets discussed promoting their No. 2 prospect, Brett Baty, but went for versatility in selecting infielder Deven Marrero from Triple-A Syracuse. Another highly regarded prospect, Mark Vientos, is considered more a first baseman and DH and wasn’t strongly contemplated as Guillorme’s replacement.

Marrero, 31, began the season with the independent Long Island Ducks and was recently signed as a minor league free agent. He has played in the Red Sox, Diamondbacks and Marlins organizations and provides middle infield depth.

“There were conversations since early [Monday] morning,” manager Buck Showalter said. “We took everything under consideration. I am not going to get into the two or three Zoom calls. I just listened … We’ll see where the next few days take us.”

Baty, the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2019 draft, was recently promoted to Syracuse from Double-A Binghamton. The lefty-swinging third baseman owns a .315/.410/.533 slash line with 19 homers and 60 RBIs in 95 games between the two levels. But team officials aren’t convinced Baty is ready defensively.

Showalter was asked if there is a feeling that Escobar can play every day.

“He’s trending in that direction,” Showalter said. “Physically he is in a good spot.”

Guillorme had become a key piece of the Mets lineup, posting a .283/.355/.357 slash line and also served as backup shortstop depth.

“The Phillies just played without [Kyle] Schwarber, the Yankees have played without [Giancarlo] Stanton,” Showalter said. “These guys, [the Braves] have played without people. He’s valuable, but so is Jacob deGrom, [Brandon] Nimmo has been down, [Jeff] McNeil has been down. Guillorme has done a lot of things for us and we’ll try to hold the fort down. … Did you think you would be saying this in August about Guillorme? He’s a valuable guy, but so are some of the people we have gotten back.”
