A struggling Luis Severino is slated to start Saturday against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium — but there might come a time the Yankees take advantage of two days off to give their ace some extra rest.
“He is scheduled to go Saturday. He came in feeling good. Obviously with the off days on the next road trip there is probably a chance to push him back potentially to give him a little more rest in between the next two starts,’’ manager Aaron Boone said of Severino — who was spanked for four runs and seven hits in a season-low four innings by the Mets on Monday night, when he absorbed an 8-5 loss and fell to 15-6.
“As of now we are staying on course with him and work with him the best we can to get him through this rough patch. Again, we think it’s closer than the results have been, but we have to get there.’’
The Yankees are off Monday in front of a two-game series against the Marlins in Miami, and then are off Thursday before they play four games versus the Orioles, who had the worst record (35-84) in baseball entering Tuesday.
In Severino’s last seven starts, the numbers haven’t produced much evidence the 24-year-old right-hander is close to escaping a horrendous stretch. The Yankees are 3-4 in those seven games. Severino was 2-4 and the math gets worse.
In 36 innings Severino gave up 54 hits (11 homers), batters hit .346 and he had a bloated 7.50 ERA.
