Maine bounced around
JUPITER, Fla. — John Maineâs spring got off to a rocky start today.
The Mets’ young right-hander lasted just 1 2/3 innings here in his spring debut against the Cardinals, giving up three earned runs, four hits and a walk before yielding to Scott Schoeneweis.
Maine, a 15-game winner last year who was scheduled to pitch two innings today, left early instead trailing 3-0 after throwing 45 pitches, 25 of them for strikes, and uncorking a wild pitch.
The Cardinals hit Maineâs fastball hard at times, most notably on a line-drive single to the right-center gap by comeback hopeful Juan Gonzalez.
A throwing error by David Wright resulted in the final run off Maine.
