Tonight’s starter, John Maine, was just removed with two outs in the fifth inning of a 3-3 tie with the Phillies because of a cramp in his left (non-throwing) forearm. Maine had just thrown a pitch to Howard when he suddenly winced while grabbing the forearm. After a brief consultation on the mound, Jerry Manuel called for Aaron Heilman to take over. Maine had allowed just one hit — a three-run homer to Howard — at the time of his exit. 11:10 P.M. UPDATE: Maine said afterward that the problem is minor and he doesn’t expect to miss any starts.
