The Mets’ phone-book sized disabled list is about to get shorter and their rotation a lot more crowded, although not in time for the Yankees. John Maine and Oliver Perez each threw a bullpen session yesterday at Citi Field, and both pitchers said claimed they are just days away from coming off the DL.
Jerry Manuel said neither pitcher would be activated this weekend when the Subway Series moves to Citi Field for three games, but late next week now appears feasible.
Perez has been on the DL since May 3 with patella tendinitis in his right knee, while Maine has been sidelined since June 7 by a pinched nerve in his right shoulder.
Maine and Perez will each make another minor-league rehab start this weekend, either at Triple-A Buffalo or Single-A Brooklyn. Of the two, Maine said he is closest to coming back.
“Probably one more [rehab] start and I’ll be good,” Maine said yesterday after throwing 40 pitches during his bullpen session.
Perez, who struggled in a three-inning rehab start Monday for Single-A Port St. Lucie in the Florida State League, indicated he is probably two more rehab starts from returning to the big leagues.
“That’s the key for me — I don’t have any pain,” Perez said. “I just have to go 100 pitches [in a rehab start] and I will be ready.”
