As expected, the Mets have pushed John Maine’s next start back to Aug. 8 against the Marlins as a precaution after the right-hander suffered a strained right rotator cuff earlier this week. Jerry Manuel said Oliver Perez will take Maine’s scheduled turn in the rotation here in Houston on Sunday. The Mets will then call up a spot starter — perhaps prized prospect Jon Niese — for their Aug. 11 makeup game with the Pirates.
