PORT ST. LUCIE –- John Maine’s scoreless streak came to an end tonight, but his spring dominance did not. The right-hander was terrific once again, recovering from a first-inning home run to throttle the Indians for the next five innings and lower his ERA to 2.33.

The homer by Jason Michaels — ending a streak of 10 scoreless innings for the Mets’ starter — was one of just four hits allowed by Maine in his longest outing of the spring.

Before he gave way to Joe Smith with two out in the sixth inning of a 1-1 game, Maine struck out seven and walked just one while throwing 97 pitches.

Maine’s fastball was in fine form, and he was also pleased with the effectiveness of his change-up. Maine’s focus remains his slider, which he said he hasn’t been placing as well as he wants to this spring.

The Mets hope Maine’s outing was a good lead-in for Johan Santana, who will try to get back on track Wednesday night here against the Orioles and right-handed starter Jon Leicester. That 7:10 p.m. game is being shown live in New York on SNY and broadcast by WFAN.
