Manny Machado offered his best to Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who announced Monday he was stepping away from baseball to see if rest would help his chronically ailing left knee which hasn’t been right since Machado slid into it late and spikes up in an April 2017 game.

“It sucks,” the Padres shortstop said Monday, as his club fell to the Yankees, 5-2. “Obviously, he could go down as one of the greatest Red Sox to ever play this game. Whenever stuff like that happens, you definitely want to walk away from the game. Hopefully he gets back and gets healthy. I think he has a couple more years on his contract, so I think he has a lot of time to get healthy and hopefully get back on that game. He’s going to go down as one of the best players to ever play in this game.”
