PORT ST. LUCIE — Whether he lands in pinstripes or not, Manny Machado already has Aaron Judge’s back.
Judge took heat from the MLB tampering police after he said Wednesday of the Orioles superstar shortstop: “Adding him to our lineup that we already got would be something special. I told him he’d look good in pinstripes.”
Of course Machado, who will become a free agent after this season, would look good in pinstripes.
On Friday at First Data Field, Machado showed his support for Judge, telling The Post: “Aaron Judge is a great kid and has a great future ahead of him. He means well, I don’t think he meant it in the wrong way, anything outside of any other player who has said that to another player.’’
To further his point, Machado said: “You know how many people I’ve told that they would look good in [Orioles] black and orange, it’s just part of the game. I think people blow it out of proportion.’’
Machado’s response to Judge?
“I didn’t answer, I just smiled,’’ Machado said, not wanting to add to the free-agent fire before the Orioles and Mets tied, 4-4. “You just laugh about the situation, just [jokes] and giggles, people talk on the field. Things that happen on the field stay on the field, you know, so you just go about your business.’’
Machado has proven to be a terrific player and teammate. He has blasted 105 home runs since 2015 and averaged 158 games a season over that span.
Focus on the now is his motto for this season, don’t look too far ahead.
“I’m just playing baseball, I think we have a pretty solid team here, and I’m looking forward to going back to short and helping this team win some games, and just doing the best I can,’’ Machado said. “I am going to try and take this team to the playoffs and do anything possible to have another great season.”
Does Machado ever think about how he would look in pinstripes?
“You know what, it really hasn’t hit me yet that I’m going to be a free agent next year,’’ he said. “I’m focused on this season. Last year, I struggled a little bit, I ended up pretty hot and I’m looking forward to changing positions over to shortstop.
“My focus is I’m trying to put an MVP season together. Try to do everything I can to hopefully take the team back to the playoffs.’’
Machado knows what this season is all about. The Yankees will be waiting for him.
“I’m trying to get myself back to being one of the best players in the game, if not the best,’’ he said.
Those are huge goals for Machado, who is only 25, a few months younger than Judge.
Jose Reyes played with Machado in the WBC last year and said of three-time All-Star: “It was an unbelievable experience to play alongside him. Since he came to the big leagues, we have a great relationship. When I was in Toronto we would play Baltimore. He texted me this morning: ‘I’ll see you there today.’
“Shortstop is his position,’’ Reyes said. “Me and [Robinson] Cano asked him last year and he said he wanted to play shortstop. He’s a good kid. The most amazing thing about him as a player is to see how calm he is, how relaxed he plays the game. So natural.’’
Machado grew up in Miami and is close friends with Alex Rodriguez. You can be sure that A-Rod has filled Machado in on what it means to be a Yankee.
“He just loved it, he loved playing in pinstripes, he always told me he would never put on another uniform and as you can see he never did,’’ Machado said of Rodriguez. “That tells you something about that.’’
It sure does and signs are pointing to Machado being a Yankee next season.
If that does happen, Machado, Judge, Gary Sanchez and Giancarlo Stanton will all look good in pinstripes.
Like Judge said, that would be something special.
