MIAMI – Veteran bullpen help will arrive today in Milwaukee as part of the Mets’ Sept. 1 roster expansion.
The Mets are bringing up experienced relievers Al Reyes and Ricardo Rincon along with youngster Carlos Muniz to aid a bullpen beset by injuries in recent days to Scott Schoeneweis (back), Duaner Sanchez (knee) and fill-in closer Luis Ayala (groin).
As well as starting pitcher Jonathon Niese, other players being brought off the disabled list or promoted from the minors today are right-hander Robert Parnell, infielder-outfielder Marlon Anderson, infielders Argenis Reyes and Ramon Martinez and catcher Gustavo Molina. More could be added with the Mets still short of the 40-man September limit.
“The more help, the better,” manager Jerry Manuel said.
Prized young outfielder Fernando Martinez won’t be among the September call-ups, team officials said. The 19-year-old Martinez is being left off because the Mets are overloaded with outfielders and don’t have a spot.
Also passed over was reliever Eddie Kunz, who struggled during a brief big league look last month.

Closer Billy Wagner, out since early August with left forearm and elbow troubles, has improved enough that he will throw in New York today – possibly off the mound.
Wagner will then be examined again by team doctors in hopes of setting a timetable for his return.

Nelson Figueroa has reason to pay extra close attention to Hurricane Gustav bearing down on New Orleans, considering the Mets reliever was called up Wednesday from the club’s Triple-A affiliate there.
“My apartment was across the street from a levee,” Figueroa said. “You could see the big, metal wall from the window . . . The whole thing is scary.”
