Mets manager Jerry Manuel was suspended by Major League Baseball for today’s game against the Pirates for bumping and aggressively arguing with umpire Bill Welke on Thursday. Manuel also was fined an undisclosed amount after he was tossed in the eighth inning of the Mets’ 7-5 win over the Phillies for angrily disputing a blown double-play call by Welke as well as Welke’s decision to cite Jose Reyes for obstructing Shane Victorino.
The suspension was made by Bob Watson, MLB’s vice president of on-field operations.
Sandy Alomar Sr. will manage in Manuel’s place this afternoon.
