PHILADELPHIA — A blustery night at Citizens Bank Park became a big chill that extended beyond the weather conditions and the Mets’ lack of offense.
The benches emptied twice. Marcus Stroman departed earlier with a tight hamstring. Buried somewhere in the storyline was the Mets’ third straight loss and seventh in nine games, 2-1 to the Phillies.
Jose Alvarado and Dominic Smith jawed after the Phillies fireballer struck out the Mets left fielder to end the eighth inning and pointed at him. The two teams spilled onto the field, without punches thrown.
Rewind to April 13 at Citi Field. Alvarado threw a pitch near Michael Conforto’s head before plunking him in the wrist during the first game of a doubleheader. Smith, from the Mets dugout, gave Alvarado an earful that day, setting the stage for Friday night’s theatrics.
“I don’t mind people pimping strikeouts, pimping stuff on the field,” Smith said. “I have never been a player like that, but I don’t mind it, I love it. But him pointing at me, coming after me, stuff like that, I mean I’m a grown-ass man. Come meet me then, if you’ve really got a problem and we can really handle it.
“He waited for his team to grab him and stuff, but I’m right there and he can meet me in the tunnel tomorrow if he really wants to get after it.”
Marus Stroman left Friday’s game with hamstring tightness, according to Mets owner Steve Cohen. AP PhotoAlvarado’s actions were unwarranted, according to Mets manager Luis Rojas.
“You get your punch out, you did what you had to do, you get off the field and let the game go,” Rojas said.
Alvarado’s strikeout of Smith came after Jeff McNeil was plunked leading off the inning and J.D. Davis walked with two outs. The runners had advanced to second and third on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the inning, Miguel Castro twice threw inside to Rhys Hoskins, and the two players exchanged glares. Players again streamed onto the field.
“We’re the most-hit team in baseball and we have been hit by the Phillies a lot, whether we go back for years,” Smith said. “This is not something that just started occurring and something we’re just crying about.”
Stroman was removed after only 64 pitches with hamstring tightness. Over those five innings, he allowed two unearned runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and one walk and lowered his ERA to 1.86. It was a fourth strong start in five for Stroman, who rebounded from a shaky performance against the Nationals last Saturday.
The right-hander said he expects to make his next start.
“I know what I have to do here in these next four or five days and this staff here is unbelievable,” Stroman said. “It’s just a matter of getting in there and doing everything we need to do to get it better and strengthening it. I have 100 percent confidence in my mind that I will be back out there in five days.”
Dominic Smith took exception to Jose Alvarado’s theatrics. AP PhotoThe Mets have scored once in their last 25 innings. Among the conspicuous absentees at the plate Friday night was Francisco Lindor, who finished 0-for-5 and saw his average dip to .189.
Stroman’s strikeout of Chase Anderson should have ended the second inning, except the pitch eluded James McCann for a passed ball, which allowed two runs to score while Anderson reached first base. The runs were unearned.
Brad Miller singled leading off the inning, and with two outs Andrew Knapp hit a slow grounder that went for an infield single, as Lindor’s off-balance throw was offline and late. Stroman then walked Odubel Herrera to load the bases before the strikeout/passed ball put the Mets in a 2-0 hole.
In the sixth, the Mets snapped a scoreless streak that had reached 21 innings. Smith delivered an RBI single in the inning after third baseman Alec Bohm grappled with J.D. Davis’ grounder — the ball got stuck in the webbing of his glove. Davis was out at first base, but Pete Alonso and Conforto advanced to second and third on the play. The Mets’ momentum died, however, on McCann’s double-play grounder.
The Mets had a semblance of a rally in the second, when Conforto walked and McCann singled, but Anderson got the next two outs. Stroman doubled leading off the third and was left stranded as the top of the order failed to deliver. Davis and Nimmo doubled in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, but were left on base.
Jeurys Familia walked two batters in the seventh following Alonso’s fielding error, but escaped the bases-loaded jam by striking out Andrew McCutchen.
