Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia returned from paternity leave on Monday and was told he was designated for assignment by the team.

Saltalamacchia was hitting a paltry .069 in 33 at-bats, but still has two years and $15 million left on his contract. Once Saltalamacchia clears waivers, the Marlins will have 10 days to try to trade him.

The move clears way for top prospect J.T. Realmuto to take over the full-time catching duties. Realmuto is hitting .265.

They could have at least given Saltalamacchia a cigar before giving him the boot.
