Another Yankee will miss some time, but for once, it’s a happy occasion.
Masahiro Tanaka will skip Sunday’s start against the Cleveland Indians after his wife Mai gave birth to the couple’s second child, a girl, on Friday. The couple also has a young boy together.
Tanaka was placed on the Yankees’ paternity leave list Saturday, and has been in New York since leaving the club’s road trip early Thursday. The righty must remain on the list for up to three days.
The Yankees called up reliever Nestor Cortes Jr., who saw time with the big-league club in May, in a corresponding move.
While the Yankees haven’t announced their plans for Sunday’s series finale against the Indians, manager Aaron Boone could opt for the opener strategy, giving the ball to Chad Green before handing it off to his powerful bullpen arms.
Green struggled in a similar experiment against the Rays on May 19.
The up-and-down hurler gave up two home runs in 1.2 innings before being replaced by Cortes, who also gave up a homer before retiring the side in a game the Yankees eventually won in a rout.
