LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. —- The Mets have two more additions to their roster.

The team on Thursday selected infielder Brad Emaus and reliever Pedro Beato in the Rule 5 draft. Both players must remain on the 25-man roster all season or be returned to their former teams.

Emaus, 24, was claimed from the Blue Jays. He hit a combined .290 with 15 homers and 75 RBIs, split between Double-A and Triple-A last season. He is primarily a second baseman.

Beato, 24, was claimed from the Orioles. The Brooklyn native went 4-0 with a 2.11 ERA in the bullpen at Double-A last season. Beato was originally drafted by the Mets in 2005, but did not sign.

“A power arm, probably out of the bullpen, and somebody who can compete for an everyday job, so we’re happy about that,” general manager Sandy Alderson said, referring to Emaus and Beato.

Alderson said he received strong reports on Emaus from special assistant J.P. Ricciardi, who had ties to the infielder from the Toronto organization.

“We’re very high on his potential as an everyday player out of the Toronto organization,” Alderson said.

The Mets lost right-hander Elvin Ramirez to Washington in the draft. Ramirez spent last season at Single-A St. Lucie.

The Rule 5 Draft occurs at the Winter Meetings between GMs each year and prevents teams from stockpiling talent in the minors that other teams would use in the majors.
