Ike Davis and David Wright will be re-examined in the next two days, with Davis scheduled to get an MRI exam on his bone bruise today and Wright slated to get a CT scan tomorrow on his lower-back stress fracture.

Sandy Alderson already has become accustomed to the bad news that seems to permanently hover over the Mets but is trying to stay positive.

“I’m hopeful for positive news, but as I reminded [Wright], we felt the same way three weeks ago,” the general manager said of Wright’s last exam, which delayed his return to the field by at least another three weeks. “We’ll see what transpires.”

Alderson said Davis’ foot remains in a boot and that he hasn’t been running.

The Mets have tried to survive without their two corner infielders, who have both been on the disabled list since mid-May. And both have had setbacks that have kept them off the field for much longer than they had believed.

“Had we folded up the tent when David got hurt or Ike . . . we’d be eight or 10 games under .500,” said Terry Collins before last night’s 7-3 loss to Oakland. “But we know how much we need those two guys back. Everybody does. We don’t want to not have them around for much longer.”

Hideki Matsui
started in left field last night for the A’s looking for his 500th professional home run, combining the homers he hit in Japan and MLB.

“Personally, I’m not really paying attention to the combined number of . . . 500 home runs,” Matsui said before going 1-for-2 with three walks last night. “On the other hand, having been in New York for such a long time, if I hit it here, then I’m sure it’ll be something that I’ll remember.”

Collins said he isn’t surprised Jack McKeon
came back to manage the Marlins.

“Chronologically, he’s 80, but his heart is much younger than that,” Collins said. “I talked to him in spring training and he still has that energy, that bug.”

He also said he would not follow in McKeon’s footsteps: “I will not be managing when I’m 80.”
