After a stellar start to his season at Triple-A Syracuse, top Mets prospect Christian Scott’s next start will be in the majors.

With the team in the midst of a stretch of 13 games in 13 days, the Mets wanted an extra starter at least one time through the rotation and Carlos Mendoza made it official after Thursday’s 7-6, 11-inning win over the Cubs at Citi Field that the organization’s top pitching prospect would take the mound Saturday against the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

“It feels like he’s ready [and] he deserves it,’’ Mendoza said of the 24-year-old. “He earned it with the way he’s throwing the ball. We’ve been talking about giving guys opportunities and here we are.”

The announcement came after another bad start from Adrian Houser, but Houser will remain in the rotation, at least for now.

The Mets remain without ace Kodai Senga, who said this week he’s on course to return very close to May 27, when he is eligible for removal from a stint on the 60-day injured list due to a shoulder sprain.

The 24-year-old Scott will take the mound Saturday and Mendoza said they will reevaluate their needs once they get to the next off day, which is next Thursday.

The Mets mostly went with a six-man rotation a year ago to benefit Senga and could do so again, which could mean Scott will be here to stay, but Mendoza and the Mets aren’t looking that far ahead.

“I think it’s too early,’’ Mendoza said about keeping a six-man rotation after giving Luis Severino and Jose Quintana — who are both coming off lengthy outings — added rest before their next starts. “We have to have those conversations.”

The conversations to bring up Scott, though, seemed pretty simple.

Earlier in the homestand, president of baseball operations David Stearns said there is a “balancing act when you call up a prospect of when is the prospect ready and then when is there the major league need? Often those need to overlap and intersect and for some guys down there, we’re probably just waiting for that intersection to occur.”

That overlap is now.

Scott is 3-0 with a 3.20 ERA in five starts at Triple-A this season with 36 strikeouts and just six walks in 25 ¹/₃ innings.

And he’s been even better following a shaky season debut, when he allowed three runs in four innings.

Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said in addition to his fastball, Scott had added a sweeper, which is paired with a more traditional slider — along with a splitter.

“What we saw in spring training, he’s got major league pitches,’’ Hefner said. “He’s gonna handle the moment. Is he gonna pitch well [on Saturday]? Who knows? But he’s worked his butt off and he’s got the ability to play this game as long as he wants.”

Drafted by the Mets in the fifth round in 2021 out of the University of Florida, Scott primarily pitched out of the bullpen until the Mets made him a starter early in his professional career.

In addition to his repertoire, Hefner and Mendoza said Scott’s mentality sets him apart, noting that he’s been able to overcome early homers to pitch well.

As Hefner said, Scott has the ability of “getting punched in the mouth in the first inning and bouncing back and shoving for the rest of the outing.”

He’ll face new challenges in the majors

“We’ve been talking about Scott for a few weeks now,’’ Mendoza said. “We’ve watched what he’s doing in Triple-A and we feel comfortable giving him the ball and bringing him to the big leagues to help us win games.”
