Carlos Carrasco didn’t necessarily turn in his best performance Wednesday afternoon, but he did have one of his most memorable ones. For the first time in his 13-year big league career, his father, Luis, was in the crowd watching him pitch.
And after the Mets pulled out the win, they surprised Carrasco by having his father present him with the team’s wrestling-style belt as the player of the game.
“When I saw my dad walking in, it was really emotional,” the 35-year-old right-hander said after tossing five shutout innings in the Mets’ 5-0 victory over the Nationals at Citi Field. “It was really fun, really special what the guys did for me.”
Carlos Carrasco pitched five shutout innings for the Mets on Wednesday. Robert SaboCarrasco’s father, who lives in Colombia, had visited him a few times when he played with Cleveland, but they never could make the dates work so that Luis was in the stands when Carrasco was on the mound. He was supposed to be at Citi Field on Friday night for his son’s outing against the Phillies, but his flight was delayed. There were no such complications Wednesday afternoon. Luis was in the crowd wearing his son’s jersey.
“Throughout my career I’ve had a lot of ups and downs, and this is going to go in a special place for me because my mom saw me pitch in 2015 and my dad couldn’t come here,” Carrasco said. “Now, almost seven years later, my dad made it, and it’s going to go in a special place for me.
“I was trying to do my best, to give the best to my dad and the team too of course.”
Carrasco improved to 6-1 and continued his strong bounce-back season after an injury-marred first campaign with the Mets. He lost his command in the third inning, walking three straight hitters, but rebounded by striking out Yadiel Hernandez to end it.
SNY caught footage of Luis celebrating the big strikeout, and when Carrasco came out of the game, he saw a replay of his ecstatic father reacting to his big out.
“I almost cried at that point right there,” Carrasco said. “I’m glad he got to see it and enjoyed the game, too.”
