Matt Harvey’s long-awaited Mets debut will have to wait for another day.

General Manager Sandy Alderson announced on Tuesday that veteran Miguel Batista will start on Saturday against the Dodgers, filling the spot in the rotation left by Dillon Gee. The decision came down to the 41-year-old Batista, who has made four spot starts this season, and the highly-touted Harvey. The Mets top pitching prospect could have hurt his chances with an uneven start for Triple-A Buffalo on Monday night.

With team executive J.P Ricciardi in the stands and Alderson watching on TV, Harvey took a no-hitter into the sixth, but struggled with his command and got a no decision in a 4-2 loss to Toledo.

The Mets remain confident Harvey will be able to contribute in the majors — likely soon. Last night’s start was Harvey’s first since June 4, although he did pitch two innings in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday.

“I was a little rusty,” said Harvey, who believes he’s prepared for the majors. “I do. … It’s not my call. Whenever they decide I’m ready, guess I’m ready.”

Gee is likely out for a season after he had surgery to remove a blood clot in his right throwing shoulder. Batista is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA in his four starts this season.
