PORT ST. LUCIE — The Mets got some good news Friday night, when they learned Donovan Mitchell Sr., their director of player relations and community outreach, tested negative for the coronavirus.

Mitchell is the father of Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell, who tested positive for the coronavirus, joining teammate Rudy Gobert as the first known cases among pro athletes in the U.S.

The Jazz played the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on March 4 and Mitchell Sr. attended the game. He was tested for the virus Thursday.

Mitchell Sr. returned to Florida on March 5 and had been regularly at work at the Mets’ spring training complex through Wednesday, in close contact with players and fans.

While the Mets dodged a potential team-wide brush with the virus that has disrupted the entire sports world, they have yet to make their plans known for the rest of the spring. General manager Brodie Van Wagenen is scheduled to address the media Saturday.
